Nepal's Electoral Scene Sees Significant Partnership Forged Between Media Personality and Ex-Rapper Mayor
In a significant move ahead of the upcoming national polls, two prominent figures in Nepali politics have joined forces. This coalition comes in the aftermath of large-scale and deadly youth-led demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually led to the removal of the incumbent government.
A Commitment to Address Young People's Demands
Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly pledged to prioritize the grievances highlighted by the new generation. This commitment comes after the turbulent anti-corruption protests that took place in September, which led to considerable loss of life.
"Agreement must not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane after the agreement was finalized.
The late summer uprising was triggered by public frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a spark for underlying discontent stemming from a long period of slow growth and longstanding allegations of systemic political corruption.
Terms of the Fresh Political Agreement
According to the formal pact, the roles for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread public dissatisfaction with the nation's older political leadership. He has previously served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case involving reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key figure in Nepal's current political transition. He was instrumental in setting up the interim government that came to power after the previous administration was removed.
Wider Government Discussions Underway
In a separate development, the current interim prime minister recently held consultations with several major political leaders. These talks involved former prime ministers and the heads of other major parties, marking the first such gathering since the time of the protests.
Following these discussions, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that holding a credible election is a shared responsibility. The statement affirmed the government's dedication to ensuring a safe and fear-free environment for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to remove any room for doubt.
